There are three legitimate ways to buy a Rolex in the United States today. You can buy new from one of Rolex’s authorized dealers (ADs). You can buy a watch from Rolex’s own Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program, which is sold through those same retailers. Or you can buy pre-owned from an independent dealer, which is what Steel & Crown is.
Each route has real advantages. This guide lays them out honestly, including the cases where we are not the best option for you.
What is Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program?
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program sells pre-owned Rolex watches through participating authorized retailers. The watches are inspected and, where needed, serviced to Rolex’s standards, and each carries a two-year international guarantee from Rolex, along with Rolex’s own certification seal and card. Rolex launched the program in Europe in late 2022 and it has since expanded to the US.
Only authorized retailers can sell watches under the program. An independent dealer cannot sell a watch as Rolex CPO, and should never imply that it can. Steel & Crown is not part of the program, and our watches are not Rolex CPO unless a specific listing says otherwise.

When is buying new from an authorized dealer the best choice?
If the model you want is available at list price and you are happy to wait, a new watch from an AD is excellent value: you pay Rolex’s price and get the full five-year guarantee. For many dress models and precious-metal pieces, availability is reasonable.
The difficulty is the most popular steel sports models. Submariners, GMT-Masters and Daytonas are often allocated through waiting lists and purchase history, and the wait can be long with no guarantee of an outcome. You also cannot choose a discontinued reference, such as a 116610LV “Hulk” or a five-digit Submariner, because ADs sell only the current catalog.
When does Rolex CPO make sense?
CPO is a good fit if the Rolex guarantee matters more to you than price. You get a pre-owned watch that Rolex’s network has certified, with a Rolex warranty behind it, from a retailer you can walk into.
The trade-offs are cost and choice. CPO watches are typically priced above comparable pre-owned watches from independent dealers, and each store’s selection is limited to what it has certified. Vintage and older references are less common.
When is an independent pre-owned dealer the right choice?
An independent dealer is usually the best route when you want:
- A specific watch now, without a waitlist.
- A discontinued or vintage reference. Our pre-owned Submariner and GMT-Master II pages include generations Rolex no longer makes.
- Choice across condition and price. Several examples of the same reference, from unworn to well worn, priced accordingly.
- Market pricing. You pay what the watch is worth in today’s pre-owned market, which for some models is below CPO pricing and for others above list price.
The trade-off is the warranty. An independent dealer’s warranty is the dealer’s promise, not Rolex’s. It is only as good as the business behind it, so check how long it lasts, what it covers, and whether the terms are published before you buy. Ours are on our authenticity and warranty page.
What does each warranty actually cover?
Warranties are where the three routes differ most, so read the terms rather than the headline.
- Rolex’s guarantee on a new watch runs five years from the date on the warranty card and covers manufacturing defects in the movement and case. It does not cover accidents, water damage from an unscrewed crown, or normal wear.
- The CPO guarantee is also Rolex’s, runs two years from the CPO purchase, and is honored across Rolex’s international service network.
- A dealer warranty is a promise from that business. Ours covers manufacturer defects in the movement for 18 months and is published in full before you buy. Some dealers offer longer terms with more exclusions; others offer only a few months.
Two practical points. First, a watch sold new within the last five years may still carry the remainder of its original Rolex guarantee, whoever sells it to you, so check the card date. Second, any warranty is only useful if you can reach the people behind it, which is why a phone number that someone answers matters.
Why do pre-owned prices sometimes exceed retail?
For the most sought-after steel models, demand at authorized dealers exceeds supply. The pre-owned market sets its own price for a watch you can buy today, and for some references that is above Rolex’s list price. How to protect yourself with any independent seller
Whoever you buy from, ask:
- Are the photos of the exact watch?
- Who authenticated it, and was the caseback opened?
- Are all parts original Rolex, and if not, which are not?
- What warranty is included, for how long, and is it in writing?
- How long is the return window?

Is Rolex CPO worth the premium?
It can be, if the two-year Rolex guarantee and buying through a Rolex retailer matter to you. If you are comfortable with a reputable independent dealer’s warranty, a comparable pre-owned watch often costs less and the choice of references is wider.
Can an independent dealer sell Rolex CPO watches?
No. Only authorized retailers participating in the program can sell watches under Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program. An independent dealer claiming otherwise is misrepresenting the watch.
Does a pre-owned Rolex still have its Rolex warranty?
Watches sold new since 2015 carry a five-year Rolex guarantee from the date on the warranty card, and it transfers to later owners. A pre-owned watch bought within that window still has the remaining Rolex coverage.
Is buying from an independent dealer safe?
It is when the dealer shows the exact watch, explains how it was authenticated, discloses non-original parts, publishes a written warranty and offers returns. Those details, not the word “authentic” on a listing, are what protect you.
