How to choose a pre-owned Rolex
Pick the model for the life you have
Swim or travel a lot? Start with the Submariner or GMT-Master II. Want one watch for the office and the weekend? A Datejust or Oyster Perpetual. Dreaming big? Daytona or Day-Date. Choose the shape you will wear every day, then narrow it down.
Choose the reference, not the nickname
Each reference number tells you the generation, metal and bezel. A 126610LN and a 116610LN look alike in photos but differ in case, movement and price. Compare by reference, check the year, and decide how much box and papers matter to you.
Buy the watch, and the seller
Look for real photos of the exact watch, a written warranty, a clear return window and a person you can call. Ask how the watch was authenticated and whether any parts are not original. A fair price with these in place beats a cheap one without them.
Authenticated by watchmakers
How we authenticate every pre-owned Rolex
Before any watch is photographed and listed, our watchmakers inspect it inside and out. Anything that is not original Rolex is stated on the listing, so you know exactly what you are buying.
Identify the watch
The reference engraved between the lugs defines the model, generation, metal and bezel. We match it to the serial, and to the card or papers when they are present. Every later check is measured against that reference.
Examine dial, hands and bezel
Printing, markers, lume and hands must be right for the reference and its production years, and the bezel insert right in type, font and material. Refinished or aftermarket dials are identified and disclosed.
Check case, bracelet and clasp
Case shape and finishing, crown, crystal and Cyclops, then the bracelet, end links and clasp codes for the reference. We note polishing and assess bracelet stretch, and it all goes into the condition grade.
Open the caseback and time it
With the caseback open, the watchmaker confirms the correct Rolex calibre and its condition. The watch then goes on a timing machine for rate, amplitude and beat error. A watch that needs service is serviced or described as such.

Independent dealer, marketplace or Rolex CPO?
There are three good ways to buy a pre-owned Rolex in the US. A marketplace such as Chrono24 gives you the most choice, but inspection, warranty and returns depend on each seller. Rolex's Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program adds a two-year Rolex guarantee, sold only through Rolex retailers and usually at a premium. An independent dealer like Steel & Crown sells its own inspected watches at market prices, with a written dealer warranty, returns and one team to call.
We are not a Rolex retailer and not part of the CPO program. If a Rolex guarantee matters most to you, CPO is the better route, and we would rather you know that.

Are your Rolex watches authentic?
Yes. Every watch is examined by our watchmakers before it is listed: reference and serial engravings, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and clasp, and the movement with the caseback open. It is timed on a timing machine. Any non-Rolex part is disclosed on the listing.
Is Steel & Crown affiliated with Rolex?
No. Steel & Crown is an independent pre-owned dealer. We are not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by Rolex SA or Rolex USA, and our watches are not sold through Rolex's own Certified Pre-Owned program. Every watch carries our own 18-month dealer warranty.
What is the difference between buying from you and buying Rolex CPO?
Rolex's Certified Pre-Owned watches are sold only by Rolex retailers and carry a Rolex guarantee. We sell independently: prices are set by the open market, stock is available now without a waitlist, and the warranty is ours, not Rolex's. We explain both options honestly in our journal.
Does the watch come with box and papers?
Each listing states exactly what is included: box and papers, box only, papers only, or watch only, with the papers date when known. Our own certificate of authenticity ships with every watch, and we never count it as Rolex papers.
What warranty do you offer?
Every watch has our 18-month dealer warranty against manufacturer defects in the movement. It is our written warranty, not a Rolex warranty, and the full terms are on our authenticity and warranty page.
How does shipping work?
Shipping is free, fully insured and signature-required anywhere in the United States. In-stock watches ship within one business day of cleared payment, and you get tracking as soon as the package leaves.
Can I return a watch?
Yes. You can return a watch within 10 days of delivery, in the condition it arrived and with everything that came with it. Call +1 971 433 9218 to start a return and we will send instructions.
Is the watch in the photos the one I receive?
Yes. Every listing is photographed individually and carries its own stock number. The watch in the photos is the watch that ships.
Are prices negotiable, and do prices include tax?
Our prices are set per watch against current pre-owned market prices. Sales tax is added at checkout where the law requires it, based on your shipping address.
